Wellbeing in Construction: Browne Jacobson

Last week, our Managing Director, Tom Haley, attended Browne Jacobson’s Wellbeing in Construction event in Birmingham, organised by Mark Stubbs. The session brought together industry professionals to focus on an increasingly critical topic across the construction sector: the relationship between wellbeing, performance, and long-term health.

The event was structured in two parts, each offering valuable and thought-provoking insights.

Supporting the Industry: The Lighthouse Charity

The first session was delivered by The Lighthouse Charity, highlighting the exceptional work they undertake to support construction workers facing personal and professional challenges.

Their impact across the industry is significant. What stands out most is that this level of support is delivered without government funding. The charity provides vital assistance to individuals and families in times of need, addressing issues that often go unseen within the sector.

For an industry that is known for its demanding environments and high-pressure conditions, organisations such as The Lighthouse Charity play a crucial role in supporting the workforce behind the projects.

Movement, Mental Health, and Performance

The second session, delivered by Dr Brendon Stubbs, explored the link between physical activity and mental wellbeing, supported by leading global research.

A key takeaway was the measurable impact of small, consistent habits. A simple 15-minute walk each day can:

  • Reduce stress levels
  • Improve productivity
  • Enhance decision-making

In the context of a 24-hour day, this is a minimal time commitment with a disproportionate benefit.

The session also highlighted longer-term research linking physical activity in teenage years with reduced symptoms of depression later in life. This reinforces the importance of encouraging active lifestyles from an early age, both within families and across wider communities.

A Personal Reflection

While these topics are not new to many in the industry, sessions such as this serve as an important reminder to prioritise wellbeing in practice, not just in principle.

Like many professionals, it is easy to overlook simple habits during busy periods. However, the event prompted a renewed focus on integrating regular movement into daily routines, including reintroducing short walks and weekly exercise.

Moving Forward as an Industry

Wellbeing in construction is no longer a secondary consideration. It is fundamental to sustainable performance, effective decision-making, and long-term workforce resilience.

Events such as this demonstrate the value of collaboration across the industry, bringing together expertise, research, and practical support to drive meaningful change.

We extend our thanks to Browne Jacobson, Mark Stubbs, The Lighthouse Charity, and Dr Brendon Stubbs for delivering an insightful and impactful session. It was also a valuable opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and meet new contacts across the sector.
